“People in 12-step programs are good at making lists.”

It’s the one you’ve been waiting for … the Sobriety Tools episode! 🎉 AKA part two of last week’s episode. We spend the entire podcast this week talking through a fantastic Listener Topic from Terry A., about the tools we’ve learned in sobriety that we wish “normies” had at their disposal.

We hope you get something valuable out of this one – and, if anyone needs to talk sobriety stuff, know that you may always feel free to message Jamie. ❤️

“Being a squeaky wheel, getting grease.”

Oh my gosh … we’re home! Like HOME home. No more shows, no more travel … done.

But, wow … this last week was full-on. And it was largely metastatic breast cancer-related. So, we spend a lot of time in this episode talking about metastatic breast cancer! It’s important, especially in Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is largely a bunch of pinkwashing bullshit, but we digress. But we’ll talk about that too!

We also had a wonderful final house concert to put a lovely exclamation point on what was easily our best touring season yet. We’re thrilled about how well it all went. We talk about this a bit as well.

Note 1: if you want to do something helpful and productive for metastatic breast cancer, then give money to MET UP and/or METAvivor.

Note 2: we need new Listener Topics! Post in the group or message one of us, please and thank you.

“A state of mind that you can’t address with caffeination.”

Some days and weeks are harder than others, you know? I know you know. We had one of those this week. In particular, last night. The kind of hard where you end up subsequently needing to talk about it for a few hours, to figure out what went wrong. And now we’re going to talk through it with you! And that’s the first half of the episode.

And then in the second half of the episode, we talk through a listener topic from Lizzie M., about what we do for self-care and regeneration in this crazy world we’re living in. This topic is apropos for us at the moment, and we’d love to hear your thoughts in the private Facebook group.

“We *all* freakin belong here.”

What does it mean to ‘belong’ somewhere? Inspired by some disparate threads converging in our world this week, we take a deep dive into this idea. We also recap the last few shows of our tour … including our 520-mile aborted trip to Canada! Hey, it beats driving in a blizzard. IN SEPTEMBER.

ps we did end up bringing our friend Min balloons and cake. It was a little bit emotional. 🙂

“A lot of us are in a transitional place.”

Oh my gosh, you all – WE’RE HOME! We’re not done tour, but we’re sleeping in our own bed tonight. First time in two and a half months. It’s going to be E P I C !

From female empowerment in Idaho to playing a concert for a homeless youth center in Oregon, we covered a lot of ground this week, both literally and emotionally. Lots to process. Fair warning, we’re getting deep in this episode.

We’re raising money to buy a music computer for the homeless youth center. You can contribute here until the end of Friday 9/27: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10157342022185631

“We apologize in advance to our new listeners.”

We have a short one for you today! We spent most of last week with our brains turned off, vegging out and recharging our batteries. We also had three absolutely wonderful shows. We didn’t draw any deep conclusions from them. Sometimes things just going well is enough.

If you want to know anything about the HGTV show ‘Good Bones,’ though, just ask us, we’re experts now. Although, geez, we’re clearly NOT experts on when the Civil War started and ended. Mortifying. Moving on!

“Honorary ‘metal’ status is kind of a big deal.”

Holy smokes – we’ve been married for ten years! Our anniversary was Friday. It feels … oddly adult? We’ve been through a lot in those ten years. Like a lot a lot. We’re both completely different people than we were when we started. When you commit to a life with someone, you don’t freeze them in amber; you join them on their continuing adventure of self-discovery and change. Which means that then you’re dealing with TWO people’s ongoing life changes … yours and your partner’s. It’s a constantly evolving learning process.

With that in mind, we spend the second half of this episode doing a bit of a 10-year Jamie + Shannon marriage recap. We talk about how we met, how Jamie proposed (it was unconventional), highlights, challenges, how we’ve changed, and what we’ve learned.

And of course also we’re still on tour! And tour was awesome this week too. We were guest lecturers at a university! And we had three wonderful house concerts. We’ll tell you all about it, with diversions about equal access to education and the things we use in our lives to check out, among other things. It’s a full episode. Welcome back!

“Karma isn’t just a good idea; it’s the law.”

We did a lot of driving across the South this last week, starting in Wilmington, NC and ending up in Texas. We stopped en route in Montgomery, Alabama, to see firsthand how that city is grappling with its history of slave-trading. It went … differently than we’d expected it would. We talk about this, and this week’s (wonderful) concerts, in the first part of the episode.

And then, in the second part, we talk about an email we got from someone who was a guest at a house concert a while back. It crossed some boundaries! And it also reaffirmed for both of us that we’re on the right path, both with what we’re doing and with how we’re doing it. You can’t please everyone … and you shouldn’t try.

“The facts & figures episode.”

Welcome to Episode 40! Forty feels like a lot of something, doesn’t it?

We spent the week bopping up and down the I-95 corridor, from Massachusetts to North Carolina. We had four shows, and each of them was a very cool experience that left us with a lot to think about.

Topics we touch upon in this episode include:

  • Reasons to believe we can tackle the big problems in the world
  • The search for greater meaning in one’s life and work
  • The difference between supporting someone and encouraging them

Bonus content: listen for the torrential mini-storm we drove through while recording this episode!

And also: please post in the secret Facebook group if you’ve ever felt a connection with someone that feels as though you knew them in a previous life. We’d love to hear about it.

“We are the current stewards of this place.”

It’s a high-speed tour week wrap-up! We’re in a stretch at the moment where we’re doing 9 shows in 9 days. It’s an intense schedule.

We recorded this episode on some beautiful back roads in New Jersey … we finished editing it while driving over the very ghostly and epic Tappan Zee Bridge … and in between we talked about the people we met this week, the conversations we had, and the things we learned. With a slight detour to talk about the stolen labor this country was founded upon. Because, even at high speed, we are still us.

Greetings from Upstate New York!
